БИШКЕК – 4 сентября студенты Американского университета в Центральной Азии (АУЦА) примут участие в первом в Кыргызстане фестивале иайдо, организованном клубом иайдо «Шисейкан». Фестиваль пройдет 4 сентября 2010 года с 14:00 до 16:00 в большом зале Дворца спорта им. Кожомкула.

«Иайдо – это искусство мгновенного обнажения и применения самурайского меча, отличающееся от других видов боевых искусств своей грациозностью и почти религиозной медитативностью. В Кыргызстане искусство иайдо развивается уже с октября 2007 года», – отмечает Аида Абдыканова, глава кафедры антропологии АУЦА и по совместительству один из организаторов фестиваля.

Помимо соревнований на мечах, зрители смогут насладиться выступлением группы «Ооэдодайко» Кыргызского-Японского Центра человеческого развития, чья искусная игра на барабанах погрузит слушателей в воображаемый мир древней Японии. Также посетителям первого в Кыргызстане фестиваля иайдо будет предложена возможность самим поучаствовать в демонстрации японской гимнастики Маккохоу, которая зарядит участников положительной энергией на весь день.

«Под завораживающий ритм японских барабанов тайко, посетители станут свидетелями выступления Хошино Томоаки, мастера 7 дана из Японии, приезжающего в Кыргызстан специально для работы со своими кыргызстанскими учениками», – подчеркивает Аида Абдыканова.

На данное мероприятие приглашаются все, кто интересуется культурой Японии, боевыми искусствами, и желает узнать больше о древнем и загадочном мире самураев.

Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the sixth President of Latvia and the first female president of the Eastern European countries, delivered a public presentation titled “The Latvian Experience in Democratic Transition”.

This presentation took place in the Hyatt Hotel and was initiated by the American University of Central Asia (AUCA). The lecture was very well-attended: participants included diplomats, students, experts in international affairs, political analysts and media representatives.

At the presentation Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga discussed the history of the Latvian democratic transition and emphasized the relevance of the Latvian experience to modern Kyrgyzstan.

Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga was elected President of Latvia in 1999 and re-elected in 2003. As President of the Republic of Latvia during 1999-2007, she has been instrumental in achieving membership in the EU and NATO for her country.

Professor Vaira Vike-Freiberga continues to be active in international politics. She was named Special Envoy to the Secretary General on United Nations reform. She is a founding member of the Club of Madrid, a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, and honorary patron of several Foundations. Dr. Vike-Freiberga has been actively participating as an invited speaker at a wide variety of international events and continues to speak up in defense of liberty, equality and social justice.

This year’s program adopts the theme “Freedom with Responsibility.” Our Orientation events are packed with academic, social, and community service learning activities that will foster responsible freedom and the AUCA’s mission and values of a liberal arts education. В АУЦА назначен новый президент

БИШКЕК, 18 мая – Совет попечителей Американского университета в Центральной Азии (АУЦА) объявил, что Эндрю Вахтел, декан магистерских программ и профессор Северо-Западного университета США (Northwestern University), назначен на должность президента АУЦА с 1 августа 2010 года.

На своей должности профессор Вахтел заменит Эллен Хурвиц, под руководством которой АУЦА достиг немалых высот, включая историческое соглашение об академическом сотрудничестве с Бард Колледжем, в результате которого АУЦА стал первым и единственным высшим учебным заведением в Центральной Азии, который будет выдавать дипломы, аккредитованные в США.

Объявляя о новом назначении, Уильям Ньютон-Смит, Председатель Совета попечителей АУЦА, поблагодарил Эллен Хурвиц за ее усердие и преданность университету и заявил: «Мы рады сообщить, что Эндрю Вахтел станет новым президентом АУЦА. Эндрю – трансформационный лидер, реформатор в области высшего образования, и с его знаниями и опытом  университет перейдет на новый уровень развития».

С 1991 года Эндрю Вахтел был профессором департамента «Славянские языки и литература» Северо-Западного университета, с 1997 по 2004 являлся ее руководителем. С 2002 по 2008 профессор Вахтел был директором Центра международных и сравнительных исследований Роберта Баффета. Эндрю Вахтел является выпускником Гарвардского университета, степень магистра и доктора наук Вахтел получил в Университете Калифорнии, Беркли.

Как отмечет сам профессор Вахтел: «Для меня большая честь возглавить университет либеральных искусств в одном из самых динамичных регионов мира. Президент Хурвиц, члены Совета попечителей, студенты, преподаватели и сотрудники АУЦА заложили прочный фундамент для развития университета, и я с нетерпением ожидаю начала совместной плодотворной работы».

«За прошедшие пять лет было много ярких достижений, и теперь мы возлагаем большие надежды на профессора Вахтела в качестве нового президента АУЦА. Мы уверены, что университет достигнет новых высот, и предстоящие годы будут периодом бурного развития. Наша цель – стать лучшим высшим учебным заведением в Центральной Азии, приверженным свободе самовыражения, познания и принципам академической честности», – отметил Ньютон-Смит.

10-месячным поиском нового президента АУЦА занимался специальный комитет, в состав которого входили члены Совета попечителей, студенты и преподаватели АУЦА. Поиск координировала американская компания по подбору топ-персонала «Isaacson, Miller». В настоящее время в АУЦА учатся более 1200 студентов со всего мира, включая страны Центральной Азии, Россию, Украину, Южную Корею, Китай, Германию, Иран, Афганистан, Пакистан, Японию и США. Университет предлагает программу бакалавриата по 11 специальностям и программу магистратуры «Управление бизнесом».

American University of Central Asia Appoints President

BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN – May 14, 2010 – The Board of Trustees of the American University of Central Asia is delighted to announce that Andrew B. Wachtel, the Dean of The Graduate School and the Bertha and Max Dressler Professor of the Humanities at Northwestern University, has been appointed the next President of AUCA, effective August 1, 2010.  Dr. Wachtel will succeed Dr. Ellen S. Hurwitz, who has led AUCA through curricular, financial, and mission development initiatives over the past five years, including an historic partnership with Bard College, providing AUCA graduates with U.S.-accredited degrees beginning next year.

In making the announcement for the Board of Trustees, its Chairman, William Newton-Smith, stated, “The University is fortunate to have Andrew Wachtel as its next president. Andrew has been a transformational leader in higher education with an outstanding record of impressive scholarship and teaching, the initiative and vision to build innovative academic programs, and the capacity to secure financial and human resources to create and implement excellent results.”

Dean Wachtel has been a tenured professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature at Northwestern since 1991, having served as Department Chair from 1997 to 2004, where his leadership resulted in increased enrollment and elevating the Department’s national ranking. From 2002 to 2008 Dr. Wachtel also was the Director of the Roberta Buffett Center for International and Comparative Studies, where he established a program in Modern Turkish Studies, among other significant achievements. Dean Wachtel received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.

In accepting the presidential appointment, Dr. Wachtel stated, “I am elated to have the opportunity to lead a liberal arts university in such a complex and dynamic region of the world. President Hurwitz, the trustees, students, faculty and staff have laid a strong foundation on which to build and I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.”

AUCA is an independent institution of higher education located in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, with an enrollment of approximately 1,200 students from over 20 countries. The University offers students a quality education based on an American college model with a credit-hours system, a liberal arts curriculum and a commitment to freedom of expression and inquiry. The University offers eleven (11) undergraduate (bachelor)-level educational programs and a master’s of business administration (MBA) degree. In addition, AUCA offers college preparatory programs in English, mathematics, computer basics and study skills.

Board Chairman Newton-Smith stated, “The Board and the entire AUCA community are extremely grateful to Ellen Hurwitz for her dedication and diligence on behalf of the University for the past five years. She can proudly leave her post at AUCA with a great record of achievement. The 10-month search for the AUCA president was led by a Search Committee composed of AUCA trustees, faculty and students, and was coordinated by the U.S.-based, executive search firm of Isaacson, Miller.

БИШКЕК – 21 апреля в Американском Университете в Центральной Азии (АУЦА) состоится показ документальных фильмов «Долгая дорога домой» (Казахстан) и «Без лица» (Кыргызстан) из серии фильмов по миграции. Показ начнется в 16.00, аудитория 315 (главный корпус АУЦА).

«Эти картины не могут оставить равнодушными ни одного зрителя, особенно если их близкие или знакомые также вынуждены искать счастье на просторах России и Казахстана», – отмечает Аида Алымбаева, директор Центра социальных исследований при АУЦА.

Фильм Ануара Райбаева «Долгая дорога домой» был снят при поддержке Министерства по миграции Республики Казахстан. Фильм повествует об истории двух сестер из Узбекистана, которые были вывезены обманным путем из страны. Оказавшись в Казахстане, вместо обещанной работы на швейной фабрике в Алмате, сестрам приходится рассортировывать мусор на свалке в одном из отдаленных регионов Казахстана. «И только несколько месяцев спустя, благодаря рейду, организованному местными властями, девушки получают долгожданную свободу», – делится впечатлениями Аида Алымбаева.

Документальный фильм «Без лица» (режиссер фильма Динара Суймалиева), в свою очередь, также поднимает непростые темы, связанные с тяжелой жизнью «гастролеров поневоле». Три девушки из Кыргызстана, мечтая о красивой жизни и достойном заработке, отправляются в Объединенные Арабские Эмираты. Однако вместо золотых гор девушки попадают в рабство. Фильм «Без лица» основан на реальных событиях и снят при поддержке Internews Network, ТРК “Пирамида”, Международной организации по миграции (МОМ) и Агентства США по международному развитию (USAID).

Показ фильмов организован Центром социальных исследований при АУЦА. Эти документальные фильмы предоставлены Центру социальных исследований Международной организацией по миграции в Кыргызстане. После показа фильмов состоится интерактивная дискуссия, где будут обсуждены проблемы трудовой миграции.

Only University in Central Asia with US Accredited Degrees

AUCA becomes the first and only university in Central Asia with the authority to award degrees that are accredited in the United States. At the March, 2010 meeting the AUCA Board of Trustees formally established the partnership with Bard College, an excellent liberal arts university located along the Hudson River in the State of New York in the United States.

”Our mission summons us to build a learning community that cherishes the exploration of ideas both for their own sake and for the development of our region. We are well on our way to designing the curriculum of the future,” emphasized President Dr. Ellen Hurwitz.

Members of our junior class are preparing to meet the twin graduation requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic and Bard College.

In June, 2011, students majoring in American Studies, Anthropology, Economics, European Studies, International and Comparative Politics, Journalism and Mass Communications, Psychology, Sociology and Software Engineering will receive both a Kyrgyz diploma and an AUCA diploma through Bard College.

From the very first days of its establishment, AUCA was committed to the academic excellence and innovation spirit. Located at the very heart of Central Asia, AUCA is a unique international, multi-disciplinary learning community that blends the culture of Central Asia with the educational traditions of Russia, Europe and the United States.

Juniors Ball 2010

On March 25, 2010, the junior class was joined by the faculty members, guests and well-wishers at the Fifth Annual Junior Ball Ceremony.

This event was held in the fashionable restaurant with “Vegas Night” as the main theme of the evening. The guest enjoyed the live performances and entertaining show.

President Dr. Ellen Hurwitz congratulated all junior students and wished them success in all their endeavors.

On March 15, 2010, John Schoeberlein of Harvard University delivered a public lecture titled “When Traditional Consensus and Individual Will Collide: Freedom and Responsibility in Modernizing Central Asian Community Life”.

“Tradition and modernity are both normative notions,” emphasized Dr. Schoeberlein at the campus wide discussion on freedom and responsibility in modern world.

“As for education, people should have more choices,” further denoted the expert.

БИШКЕК, 17 марта – 19 марта в Американском Университете в Центральной Азии (АУЦА) выступит Уильям Силкок, профессор Государственного Университета Аризоны, школа журналистики и массовых коммуникаций Вальтера Кронкайта. Профессор Силкок расскажет о новых тенденциях в современной журналистике, а также представит общественности термин «племенной журнализм». Лекция начнется в 17.30 в 311 аудитории, главный корпус АУЦА.

«Чтобы понять новую эру новостей, необходимо понять термин «племенной журнализм», откуда он появился и что он значит для журналистов», – вопрошает профессор Силкок.

Профессор Силкок работал на WPDE-TV (ABC), KIVI-TV (ABC), KSL-AM (CBS). Является автором многих книг, статей и монографий. Имеет степень магистра коммуникаций университета Бригхэм Янг. Докторскую диссертацию Силкок защитил в Школе журналистики Университета Миссури.

Как утверждает профессор Силкок: «Племена могут быть двух типов: это журналисты, которые бьют в барабаны, и это публика, которая посылает дымовые сигналы. Оба племени пытаются наладить связь друг с другом сквозь огромные медиа ландшафты, однако некоторые по-прежнему продолжают бить в свои барабаны и слушать только их».

Что касается термина «племенной журнализм», стоит отметить, что еще в ноябре 1995 года Давид Талбот, главный редактор Salon.com, в интервью The New York Times рассказал о «племенах журналистов», которые покинули ряды традиционных СМИ, чтобы создать «животрепещущую электронную альтернативу» в Интернете.
